The proposed Hithadhoo–Hulhudhoo–Meedhoo link bridge (a flagship infrastructure pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration) has entered its design and feasibility phase. In October 2025, the government signed a six-month agreement with TYLIN International Engineering Consulting (China) Company Limited to conduct surveys, prepare designs for three proposed bridge concepts, and develop the technical specifications and tender documents needed for construction.
As of early 2026, the design work is underway, with finalisation of the documents expected by mid-2026. Once a design is selected, the government will begin preparations for the construction phase. Previous attempts to advance the project through other consultants did not reach the construction stage.
For Meedhoo residents, the bridge would be transformational: it would provide a permanent road link to Hithadhoo (Addu's administrative and commercial centre), eliminating dependence on ferry services and dramatically improving access to the Addu Equatorial Hospital, the regional port, and Gan International Airport.
“A bridge to Hithadhoo would end Meedhoo's isolation: no more ferry-dependent access to the hospital, port, and airport.”
